Artist Profile
Mariandrie
Born 1989, Limassol, Cyprus
Mariandrie’s work aims to challenge socio-political preconceptions and biases, fostering fresh perspectives for both herself and her audience as a way to rediscover personal and collective identity.
Mariandrie (b.1989) is a Cypriot multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, installation, and textiles. Her work brings together opposing notions—male and female, self and other, rigidity and softness, past and present—creating hybrid forms that bridge craft and fine art. Through this, she challenges societal preconceptions, particularly around gender, while offering inclusive narratives rooted in identity, memory, belonging, and cultural heritage.
Textiles are central to her practice, where she employs embroidery, knitting, sewing, and unconventional materials in acts of making, unmaking, and reimagining. Historically associated with the feminine and domestic, fiber becomes in her hands a metaphor for resilience, resistance, and reclamation. By repositioning traditional methodologies within contemporary art discourse, Mariandrie reveals the layered emotional, political, and historical resonance of the medium.
Her work moves fluidly between the personal and the collective, interrogating the gendered frameworks embedded in color, material, and labor. At once intimate and assertive, poetic and political, her pieces reflect on contemporary womanhood, shifting gender roles, and the complex negotiations of identity in today’s society.
Mariandrie holds a BA in Fine Arts from Lancaster University (UK) and an MA in Visual Arts in Education from the European University in Cyprus. She has participated in residencies worldwide—including in Cuba, Greece, Germany, and Cyprus—and exhibited widely, with works in private collections and the State Gallery of Cyprus. She is represented by The Edit Gallery in Cyprus and lives and works between Cyprus and Greece.
